IN: Smart Girls
No really, smart girls are in. Fashion designers say so - and really, when are the runways wrong? Glasses are the new black or new skulls or new robots or whatever the heck is in right now (I tend to forget because, you know, I'm like already down with Fall/Winter 2007 and looking towards the resort collections for 2008). And sure, I know that glasses don't make you smart but they sure make you look smart, which is why I always opt not to wear contacts for job interviews. Silly, but it seems to work.
But back to the past, present and near future. For this Spring, lovely and talented Canuck, Kim Mimran mixed glasses with sweet sixties-inspired ensembles on the models at her Pink Tartan show.

And style-maker, Miuccia Prada showed girly cat-eye spectacles the Pink Ladies from Grease would have swooned over, at her Spring Miu Miu presentation.

Finally, for Fall 2007, Yigal Azrouƫl (who I honestly hadn't heard of until this season) put big, eighties-style, black-rimmed glasses on both his girls and guys. The look was a little more typical bookworm than Pink Tartan or Miu Miu, with wooly layers and stripey scarves but there was still a hint of glamour - because, let's face it. Throw anything onto a super-skinny model (No, of course ibeing anorexic is not glamorous but skinny, despite the hoopla, is the industry standard right now) who's strutting down a brightly lit runway with hordes of fashionistas and photographers in awe, and it seems glamorous, okay?

The moral of this story, people, is that glasses are hip and the best kinds are retro and a bit ironic. If you're prepping for sunny springtime and plan to sport contacts because you want to avoid the glare, go for classic eighties Ray Bans, this summer's response to oversized socialite specs.
